Researching the Power of Play in Children's Hospitals

Across 2022 and 2023, we conducted ethnographic research with Starlight Children’s Foundation to understand the power of play for children who are unwell. This involved working with children and families in hospitals, hospital play staff, and children and families who benefit from Starlight’s events.

Cover of ScotYouthandCOVID2 report

Approach

We visited children’s hospitals to shadow the hospital play teams as they supported children, teenagers and their families. This included work to distract children during medical procedures, support their learning around what was happening for them and what will happen next, and combat boredom during waits and long stays.

We also interviewed children and parents who have attended Starlight’s events to understand what is already good, and what could be better. We also conducted a collaborative workshop to share ideas for future ways these might be organised.

Finally, we checked all our findings with play staff in medical settings across the UK, and children and families receiving Starlight services across the UK.

Outcome

We learnt a huge amount from everyone involved in this collaborative work. The results and recommendations are now being used by Starlight to make sure their services best meet the needs of sick children, young people, and the staff and families that support them.

Celebrating the Children’s Neighbourhood Festival in Falkirk

In September 2024, A Place in Childhood (APIC) collaborated with children and teenagers from Langlees and Bainsford, Falkirk, to deliver the inspiring Children’s Neighbourhood Festival. This vibrant event, rooted in co-creation, celebrated community spirit and showcased the power of young people’s ideas.

The festival, born from a neighbourhood planning project with local schools, aimed to highlight the area’s positive aspects while promoting play, cycling, and environmental awareness. With funding from Paths for All and Falkirk Council, the young participants took the lead—planning activities, designing posters, and learning valuable teamwork skills.

The event featured everything from inflatables and creative arts to climate action stalls and exotic animals, uniting the community in a joyous celebration. It was more than just a fun day—it demonstrated the lasting impact of empowering children through co-creation.

Read more about this remarkable festival and hear directly from the young changemakers in our blog and podcast!

Working with a team of 10 budding young designers, we alternated between site visits, group discussions, and using Minecraft to explore designs for a new public square in neighbouring Langdale Street. The Minecraft world included a faithful rendering of the local area, with local landmarks and many of the children’s homes.
