Exploring the Power of Play in Children’s Hospitals
The Project
We worked with Starlight Children’s Foundation to research the play experiences of children and young people in hospitals, and of engaging with family support service.
Approach
We conducted ethnohraphic research by visiting children’s hospitals and shadowing their Hospital Play Teams. As we went, we spoke with staff and patients around their experiences and the various ways play has supported them, and could support them further. We also interviewed children and parents receiving family support and activities, to find out what was already working and what could be better. From all the work, we came up with shared principles for the power of play, and sought further input from play and health professionals, and families across the country. This led to reccomendations for how play can be further improved for children who are unwell, and Starlight’s role in supporting this.
Outputs and Impact
We learnt a huge amount from this work, and it’s now having an impact in how Starlight and partners organise their service offerings.
